What is digital sustainability and what does it take to be eco-friendly when interacting with the world of technology?
Green computing studies how the environmental impact of technological means can be minimized, suggesting that a sustainable approach must accompany the entire lifecycle of technological goods, from production to disposal.
Surprisingly, considering how insignificant some actions may seem to us, the emissions that derive from our digital activity can be quite reprehensible. Even the shortest e-mail produces around 19g of CO2 (destined to increase with the size of the attachments), not to mention the energy waste that intensifies emissions of greenhouse gas. Moreover, a significant rise in e-waste has consequences on public health, due to the toxic substances that are released in particles, especially when some appliances are dismantled incorrectly. Air, soil and water are inevitably contaminated, causing irreparable damage to our bodies. As a reaction, many initiatives have arisen around the world to enhance sustainability, such as the GEC (Global Electronic Council) that leverages the power of buyers to promote a conscious and sustainable attitude when buying and selling technology. For what concerns the EU, the EGDC (European Green Digital Coalition) was founded in 2021. Supported by the European Commission and the European Parliament, some ICT companies signed a Declaration to support the Digital and Green transition of the European Union, dealing with many sectors’ sustainability goals.
Governments should enhance sustainability for their systems, as well as put pressure on companies on the importance of green computing, since it’s extremely important that technological progress would strike a balance between the increase in demand and the necessity to lower environmental repercussions.
In conclusion, how can we make a responsible use of such resources?
First of all, by purchasing environmentally friendly mobile phones, computers, appliances. Secondly, by selecting energy-efficient software, as well as hardware that must be granted with a long service life. Lastly, by privileging cloud computing, to reduce the amount of technological equipment.

Following the announcement made in October 2023, on 4th November 2024, UniCredit completed the acquisition of AlphaBank Romania, for a price comprising 9.9% of UniCredit Bank Romania’s share capital and 255mn euros in cash.

The merger was approved by the European Commission and it’s expected to be completed before the second half of 2025. The EC concluded that the deal will not raise competition concerns due to the limited market shares. This deal positions the bank as the 3rd largest in Romania, with a cumulated share of 12% by assets.

Looking at recent mergers and deals closed by UniCredit, such as the increase of 21% stake in Germany’s Commerzbank, there can be seen a tendency of consolidation within the Central and Eastern European Area. Moreover, in the Eastern European area, UniCredit represents the Best Bank in Bulgaria and Bosnia and the Best Private Bank in Bulgaria and Croatia , holding more than 10% in the loans market for the previously mentioned countries. However, in Romania, the market share of loans is smaller than 5%.

Therefore, is this takeover meant to strengthen UniCredit’s position in Romania and put it on the way to becoming the largest one in the Romanian Banking Sector? And if so, what will happen to the Romanian Banking Giants Banca Transilvania and BCR, followed by a more important question, how are romanian customers and corporations directly affected by these changes?

A year after its inclusion, a new FATF report states that the country has “taken steps to improve its anti-money laundering measures,” “has demonstrated initial implementation of its national action plan,” outlining its AML/CFT strategy, and “has demonstrated initial implementation of risk-based supervision of postal money transfer operators, foreign exchange companies, and real estate firms.”

How do Bulgarians launder money? The dirty money is laundered through real estate, luxury goods, crypto assets, gambling, restaurants, also through party building. In Bulgaria the easiest way to launder money is through the industry of hospitality or in other word restaurants and coffee shops. For example, if the actual profit of the restaurant is 200 eur, but you declare 1000 eur, the difference of 800 eur is laundered money which is probably from the sale of drugs .

❗️Bulgaria has one of the biggest historical and cultural heritages in the Balkan peninsula. However, Western Europeans mostly associate my home country with its high Corruption Perceptions Index. According to the ranking of the Financial Action Task Force, the global money-laundering watchdog, Bulgaria is on the Black grey list for jurisdictions with weaknesses in establishing measures for money laundering.

While criminal networks moved around $670 million in dirty money through TD accounts, the bank’s monitoring systems let nearly 92% of its $18.3 trillion in transactions slip through unnoticed.

Some of the revelations seem almost unreal: certain TD employees allegedly accepted gift cards to ignore massive cash deposits linked to crime. The bank added high-risk services, like Zelle, without boosting its monitoring—an open invitation for abuse. One money-laundering network, capitalizing on TD’s lax practices, moved nearly half a billion dollars without drawing scrutiny. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) has since capped TD’s assets and halted its growth until it revamps compliance.

Now, TD faces a multi-year, regulator-imposed makeover, as it tries to shake off the label of “easy target” for financial crime. This case sends a clear message: cutting corners on compliance comes at a massive cost.

🔍Following the pandemic-triggered market crash, the commercial air industry is rapidly recovering. Larger conglomerates eye expansion, with Lufthansa currently negotiating a 41% stake in ITA Airways for 325 million euros. This adds to Lufthansa’s prior acquisitions such as Swiss, Austrian and Brussels Airlines to name a few.

EU officials have raised concerns about potential competition law breaches and has prompted Lufthansa to offer concessions to secure EU approval. These include airport slots, traffic rights, and plane transfers to competitors. According to the office guided by the Commissioner for competition Margrethe Vestager, the acquisition would create an anti-competitive situation in 39 routes, both international and domestic, as well as a dominant position at Milan’s Linate airport.
The deal mainly threatens fair competition particularly on short-haul routes between Italy and Central Europe, and long-haul routes to the US, Canada, and Japan. Lufthansa is willing to negotiate on 8 of 12 routes where it and ITA operate alone.
The current issues are the types, and the amount of concessions Lufthansa is offering to compensate the dominant position it will end up holding. So far, rumors have been limited to air slots at Milan’s Linate airport and competitor entry into short-haul routes from Milan and Rome, as well as a blockade on increased pricing on Intercontinental flights between Europe and North America.
All European providers face legislative scrutiny. IAG, owner of British Airways and a Lufthansa competitor, faces similar scrutiny in its bid for Air Europa.

So, what can we expect? Lufthansa attended a closed-door hearing on Friday, April 19th in front of senior Commission and national competition officials to discuss the deal, also with the participation of rival groups such as IAG. Guillaume Loriot, vice-general director of the Commission for mergers, as well as representatives of national competition agencies were also present. The Commission is due to decide on the deal by June 6th, 2024.
