In a landmark ruling, real estate tycoon Truong My Lan has been sentenced to death by a court in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for her role in the country’s largest financial fraud case. The 67-year-old chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat, a prominent real estate company, was found guilty of orchestrating a fraud scheme totaling $12.5 billion, representing nearly 3% of Vietnam’s 2022 GDP.

Lan’s illegal control over the Saigon Joint Stock Commercial Bank from 2012 to 2022 enabled her to siphon off funds through thousands of ghost companies and by bribing government officials. Her arrest in October 2022 was among the most high-profile in Vietnam’s ongoing anti-corruption drive, known as the Blazing Furnace campaign, which has targeted corruption at the highest levels of Vietnamese politics.

The magnitude of Lan’s trial has sent shockwaves through the nation, raising concerns about corruption within the financial sector and its broader impact on the economy. The real estate sector has been heavily affected, with many firms withdrawing from the market and developers offering incentives to attract buyers.

Foreign investors, crucial to Vietnam’s economic growth, have become jittery amidst the uncertainty, particularly as Vietnam positions itself as an alternative to China for supply chain diversification. Despite the challenges, Vietnam’s leadership, including Communist Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, has reaffirmed its commitment to the long-term fight against corruption.

Lan’s sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of corruption and the importance of transparency and accountability in maintaining a healthy business environment. The ruling underscores Vietnam’s determination to tackle corruption and restore public trust in its financial institutions.
